Moving to a hostel outside of London

You won't find as many hostels outside of London as there are in London. But most cities and big towns will have one or more.

Hostels can be a good option if you aren't sure whether your move to an area will be a permanent one. The accommodation you will get will be furnished and you can usually stay for short periods only if you want to. Although not all hostels will be able to offer you a place straight away, you can usually find a hostel place fairly quickly.

As well as providing you with a room, hostels often provide other support such as help in accessing other local services and employment and training. This type of help can be really important when you are moving to a new area. As you will be living with lots of other people, they can also be a good way to make new friends. Some will also be able to help you get move-on housing when you leave, and might even have arrangements with other local landlords to get you a place with them.

Local housing advice centres usually have information about all hostels in their area and who they are willing to take. Details of how to contact housing advice agencies are usually available from council websites. To find the website address and contact details for the council in the area you are interested in moving to, click on www.oultwood.com/localgov/uk. They may be able to give you a list of hostels to contact. If you live in supported housing at the moment you might find that your support worker or resettlement worker has access to the UK Advice Finder service which keeps details of advice agencies across the country.

If you click on Hostels you can find more information on:

  • the pros and cons of moving to a hostel
  • what hostels are like and the different types of hostel
  • how to find the right hostel for you.
